Dr Kate Hanson and the Unsolved Crime Unit are baffled as to motive when the body of a young man is discovered.
When a body is discovered locked inside a church crypt, its throat torn out, the victim's identity is quickly established as 20-year-old Matthew Flynn, son of one of the city's leading entrepreneurs, who disappeared a year earlier.
For forensic psychologist Kate Hanson, the evidence reveals careful planning but also loss of control. It makes no sense. Nor can she and her team agree as to motive. Is it drugs? Money? Sex? The only thing that's clear is that Matthew Flynn had been keeping secrets from his family and friends.
Then Kate discovers that another young man is missing. And the case takes a disturbing new twist ...

Forensic psychologist Kate Hanson works for the Unsolved Crime Unit (UCU), where her skill at providing insights into perpetrators' mind-sets and motives has been invaluable. So it's not surprising that Hanson is called in when the body of Elizabeth Williams, who's been missing for more than a year, is discovered in a shallow grave. The body is so decomposed that it's difficult to determine the cause of death. While Hanson and her colleagues are up for a challenge, this case seems nearly unsolvable, what with the time that's elapsed since Elizabeth's murder, an undetermined cause of death, and the only witness a mentally disabled man who claims he heard Elizabeth's killer speaking to her the night she died. But when a pregnant woman is attacked, and the words her attacker uses are almost identical to the ones the witness claims he heard Elizabeth's killer say, Hanson thinks she may have a real lead. A gripping, suspenseful, cleverly plotted story with plenty of unusual twists and a smart, independent heroine.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)

Psychologist Kate Hanson teaches at a British university but also consults for the Unsolved Crime Unit of the local police. This time a body found in the crypt at St. Bartholomew's church turns out to be that of 20-year-old Matthew Flynn, who'd been missing for more than a year. When the Flynn family is notified of Matthew's death, Matthew's father and brother seem almost unaffected, although his mother is deeply distressed. Frustrated, Kate and the UCU team delve deeper into the case, ultimately unlocking a well-hidden secret and a web of deceit and jealousy. Solid mystery fare for readers who favor traditional British crime stories.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
